A USB port is crucial component that most users are going to need in order to run peripherals such as a printer, mouse, keyboard and more. If that port doesn’t work, your computer is as good as a paperweight. Fixing something such as a USB port really isn’t that hard if you know what you’re doing. Even if you’re not the best with computers, following the tips below can get your port working no time.
The first step that you’re going to want to do is shut down your computer. After it has been shut down, unplug everything that is plugged into a USB port. Once these devices are unplugged, proceed to turn your computer back on.
Once the computer is up and running, proceed to right click the “My Computer” icon. After the right click, proceed to hit properties, then hardware. When the hardware box pops up, you’ll want to choose the device manager tab. This device manager tab is collection of all the devices that are currently hooked up to your computer as well as shows you if everything is up to date and working properly such as your monitor, video card and other devices.
When you’re on the device manager screen, look for the “Universal Serial Bus Controller” with a plus sign that is next to it. According to ehow.com, if there is a yellow question mark next to it, this will indicate that there is a problem with your USB port.
If there is a yellow question mark next to it, the next step that you’re going to want to take is by finding your initial installer CD that came with your computer. This CD is going to have all your drivers on it such as your video card hardware and so forth. If you don’t have it, you can also download it via your manufacturer’s website as well. From there, place the CD in and re-install the USB driver. If everything goes smoothly, the USB port should work 100% again.
